Arriving in Annecy, France: A Lakeside Welcome
We parked at the central Parking Bonlieu, located near cultural institutions like the Bonlieu Scène Nationale, Annecy’s main performing arts center. Right away, the town’s outdoorsy vibe struck us—cyclists, joggers, and locals were out in full force, enjoying the warm April sunshine.
Strolling Across Le Pâquier: Pasture-Turned-Promenade
From the garage, we walked across Le Pâquier, a vast open esplanade stretching along the lake’s edge. Originally part of communal grazing land (hence the name, which means “pasture”), Le Pâquier now offers stunning views of Lake Annecy and the surrounding Alps. It’s one of the city’s most iconic green spaces and a perfect place for a stroll.
Pont des Amours: A Bridge with a Legend
Our route led us to the romantic Pont des Amours (Lovers’ Bridge). According to local legend, a kiss on the bridge ensures eternal love. The iron footbridge, built in the early 20th century, connects Le Pâquier to the Jardins de l’Europe, offering sweeping lake and canal views that have made it a favorite photo spot for decades.
Nearby, the kids found a playground and burned off some energy while we took a break under the sun, grateful for this peaceful pause between destinations.
Walking Along Le Thiou: Annecy’s Historic Waterway
We continued along the Le Thiou River, one of the shortest rivers in France and historically significant to Annecy’s development. It powered numerous mills and tanneries during the Middle Ages, helping the town flourish economically. Today, the river’s crystal-clear waters wind through the Old Town, flanked by cobbled streets and flower-filled balconies.
Crossing Pont Perrière: A Gateway to the Old Town
Crossing the Pont Perrière, we admired the view of the Palais de l’Isle, a medieval stone building shaped like a ship in the canal. Built in the 12th century, it has served as a lord’s residence, a courthouse, and a prison. Though we didn’t have time to go inside, its storybook silhouette added a rich historic atmosphere to our walk.
Ice Cream & Coffee: Local Treats on a Warm Day
The kids were thrilled to stop for a treat at Glacier des Alpes, known for its handmade gelato. On this warm spring day, the refreshing scoops hit the spot. A few steps later, we passed the inviting aromas of Les Caprices d’Émilie, a sandwich shop beloved for its gourmet creations. We resisted temptation (barely) and made our way to Café Bunna, a small local café serving up excellent cold brew coffee.
A Slow Walk Back: Cheese, Brasseries, and Last Impressions
Wandering back toward our car, we passed traditional fromageries and cozy brasseries, each one looking like a destination in its own right. It was hard to leave, but we took with us a deep appreciation for Annecy’s blend of history, natural beauty, and relaxed elegance.
Final Thoughts: The Perfect Stop Before or After the Alps
Though our time here was short, it left a lasting impression. Whether as a pre- or post-ski escape or a stand-alone destination, Annecy offers a slower, scenic way to experience the Alps that’s both charming and unforgettable.
We hit the road to Lyon already planning our return.
