Lisbon for Families: A Kid-Friendly Travel Guide to Portugal’s Vibrant Capital
Beautiful Lisbon, nestled into the hillsides lining the Tagus River in Portugal, has become an increasingly popular destination among travelers. With near-perfect summer weather, stunning architecture, and a vibrant culture, this city is a treasure trove for all ages. While much of Lisbon’s charm lies in leisurely strolls, discovering quaint alleys, dining on sun-soaked patios, and visiting historical landmarks, families with children often wonder how best to experience the city. After visiting Lisbon with our daughters many times, we’ve compiled this guide to help you make the most of Lisbon with kids in tow.
Parks and Playgrounds: Where Kids Can Roam Free
While parks in Lisbon are relatively few and far between, the ones available are worth the visit:
- Next to the Time Out Market: This small but lively park offers a place for kids to stretch their legs while adults enjoy proximity to the culinary delights of the market.
- Jardim da Estrela: A charming garden with shaded pathways, a playground, and ample space to unwind.
- Alvito Playground: Lisbon’s largest playground situated in the Monstanto park. The bus is a relatively easy option for reaching this park without a car.
- Belém Gardens: Located near the Monasteiro dos Jerónimos, this spacious area is perfect for a family break during your cultural exploration.
Unique Ways to Explore the City
One of the joys of Lisbon is its eclectic modes of transportation, which can be especially exciting for kids:
- Tuk Tuks: These small motorized vehicles are a hit with younger travelers. Many tuk tuks come equipped with toddler seats, making them a convenient and fun way to navigate the city’s hilly terrain.
- Trams: While Tram 28 is iconic, it’s often crowded. Tram 25 provides a less hectic alternative with equally scenic routes.
- Elevators and Escalators: In the Chiado/Baixa subway station there is a series of (free) escalators that elevate you to the Praça Luís de Camões in Chiado. There are elevator trams along the Ave Liberdade and elsewhere throughout the city. And of course there is the Santa Justa Lift. All great options to save tired legs.
- Boat Tours and Ferries: Take a leisurely ride on the Tagus River for stunning views of Lisbon from the water.
- Subways: this option is not particularly unique, but is the best way to get around the city. Quick and reliable.
Zoos and Aquariums: Wildlife Adventures in the City
- Oceanário de Lisboa (Lisbon Aquarium): A must-visit, the aquarium features a massive central tank surrounded by diverse marine exhibits. The layout ensures an immersive experience as you descend through its various levels. It’s easily accessible via the subway or by train from Santa Apolónia to Oriente Station.
- Lisbon Zoo: This fascinating zoo combines historic architecture with lush gardens and an impressive array of animals. Don’t miss the baboon exhibit, where baby baboons occasionally venture out of their enclosure. Opt for the subway to get here—a much easier alternative to walking.
More Kid-Oriented Activities
Lisbon also boasts several attractions that are perfect for curious and adventurous kids.
- The Pavilhão do Conhecimento (Science Museum) offers interactive exhibits that will captivate children and adults alike, encouraging hands-on exploration of scientific concepts.
- The Museu da Carris (Transportation Museum) is a delight for kids fascinated by vehicles, showcasing historic trams, buses, and other modes of transport that have shaped Lisbon’s history.
- For a serene indoor experience, visit the Estufa Fria (Indoor Botanical Garden) in Eduardo VII Park, where families can wander through lush greenery, tropical plants, and even small waterfalls, making it a peaceful retreat in the heart of the city.
- Hello Park, an interactive outdoor playground, combines nature and technology to offer unique play zones for kids of all ages, ensuring hours of fun and exploration.
Benfica Games
For the sports lovers out there attending a Benfica game is a thrilling affair rivaling many of the best stadium atmospheres. If you are in town when there is a game and your kids are old enough for an 8pm start time this will be a very memorable experience.
Pracas (Squares) and Miradouros (Overlooks)
Lisbon is famous for its stunning viewpoints, or “miradouros,” and squares, or “Pracas”, offering breathtaking vistas of the city and beyond:
- Praca do Comercio: Lisbon’s grand waterfront square, is a vibrant hub of activity surrounded by stately yellow buildings and open views of the Tagus River. This iconic location is perfect for a family stroll, offering space to relax, enjoy street performances, or take in the beauty of the city’s historical architecture.
- Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara: This terraced garden offers sweeping views of downtown Lisbon, the castle, and the river. Here the kids can run around in a safe space while parents enjoy a beer, wine, or cocktail.
- Miradouro da Senhora do Monte: Perched at the high point of the Graca neighborhood this miradouro has the most beautiful views of the city. It’s a fantastic spot for a family photo with Lisbon’s iconic red rooftops and the Tagus River as a backdrop. Take the 28 tram to avoid the steep walk.
