Nestled in the heart of the Austrian Alps, Zell am See is a charming destination that offers unforgettable family experiences. Whether you’re skiing on pristine slopes, enjoying local delicacies, or exploring nearby attractions, this picturesque town promises something for everyone. Here’s a recap of our early December trip to Zell am See, where we found great snow, delicious food, and warm hospitality.

Skiing Adventures

Our family was eager to hit the slopes, and Zell am See did not disappoint. We skied at two incredible resorts:

  • Kitzsteinhorn Glacier: Known for its high-altitude skiing, Kitzsteinhorn delivered excellent snow conditions even in early December. We enrolled the girls in ski lessons, which helped them get acquainted with skiing in Austria (and Europe) for the first time. While visibility was low for most of the day, the sun peaked out near the summit and gave us some incredible views. During our moments of good visibility we thoroughly enjoyed the quality of the snow, which offered a smooth and enjoyable ride for all levels of skiers in our family. Jausenstation Häuslalm was a fun après ski stop for snacks and drinks prior to departing the slopes.
  • Schmittenhöhe: This ski area was a highlight for its diverse terrain. From wide beginner-friendly runs to more challenging slopes, Schmittenhöhe had something for everyone. We mostly skied and rode on the ridgeline serviced by the Areitbahn, which featured children’s obstacle courses and a playground that made for a fun break. The number 8 run at the top of the mountain was a memorable way to finish our day. Additionally, the Panorama SB restaurant at the top of the TransitExpress was a great stop for snacks and drinks before we headed back down into Zell am See. The stunning views of the surrounding Alps made the experience even more magical.

Cozy Accommodations

We stayed at The Gast House Zell am See, a family-friendly hotel that felt like a home away from home. The kitchenette in our room was incredibly convenient for preparing dinners, which we stocked with bratwursts, frankfurters, and cured meats from Metzgerei Schultes – Filiale, as well as fresh ingredients from the local Billa grocery store. The small but warm indoor pool was a favorite spot for the kids to unwind after a day on the slopes, and the hotel’s hearty breakfast provided the perfect fuel to start each day.

Dining Highlights

Zell am See has a variety of dining options to satisfy any craving. Two spots stood out during our stay:

  • Deins & Meins: This restaurant offered a cozy atmosphere and delicious meals that delighted both the adults and kids in our group. The menu was varied and well-executed, making it a memorable dining experience.
  • Pizzeria Giuseppe Zell am See: After long, active days on the mountain, we picked up pizzas from this local favorite to enjoy back at our hotel. The flavors were authentic and satisfying—perfect comfort food for tired skiers.

A Day Trip to Innsbruck

After two days of skiing, we took a break to explore more of Austria. We drove through the breathtaking Alpine scenery to Innsbruck, where we spent the day wandering the festive Christmas markets. The twinkling lights, artisan stalls, and seasonal treats made for a magical experience. Kasespaetzle and Tyrolean noodles were a hit with Zoey while the adults enjoyed a pretzel topped with raclette and pancetta! To break the chill try the gluhwein, which is a warm mulled wine, served in a mug designed for the market. Innsbruck’s combination of historical charm and vibrant holiday spirit was well worth the journey.
