Marrakech is a city of contrasts, where vibrant souks meet serene gardens and ancient traditions blend with modern luxury. For our family, it was the perfect destination to experience a mix of cultural exploration, shopping adventures, and well-deserved relaxation. Here’s how we made the most of our time in this magical city.

Staying at Riad Itrane: A Gateway to the Medina

We began our trip at Riad Itrane, a charming and centrally located riad close to the iconic Jemaa el-Fna square. The riad’s proximity to the bustling medina made it an ideal base for exploring both during the day and at night. Jemaa el-Fna transforms as the sun sets, with snake charmers and performers giving way to food stalls and musicians, creating an unforgettable atmosphere for the whole family. The pool was chilly, but that didn’t stop our oldest from jumping in for a few minutes. Relaxing on the rooftop terraces were a wonderful way to recharge in the afternoons before getting ready for dinner.

Culinary Highlights: Moroccan Flavors

Our culinary journey in Marrakech was a highlight of our trip. We dined at several family-friendly restaurants that offered a mix of traditional and modern Moroccan cuisine:

  • Riad Itrane: We enjoyed an incredible family friendly meal out first night at the hotel. The adults started with a traditional Moroccan vegetable salad and had chicken tagine and beef kefta tagine as our entrees while the kids enjoyed pasta bolognese. We finished with a decadent chocolate cake! The hotel was incredibly accommodating for our dinner.
  • Le Grand Bazaar: A vibrant spot with a menu that pleased both kids and adults. We sat on the rooftop terrace for some reprieve from the busy medina below.
  • Le Bistro Arabe: Perfect for savoring a modern take on authentic Moroccan dishes in a refined setting. This was the most decadent meal we had with beautiful intense flavors in every dish. Live jazz flowed through the restaurant as we enjoyed our meal. The kids tried a variety of the dishes but ultimately settled for the safety of the chicken entree. The sardine meat balls were surprisingly delightful (check out this harissa spiced snapper recipe for a taste of Marrakech in your home).
  • Maison Reine: A cozy and contemporary restaurant with delicious options for everyone in an open air setting. This is a tapas/small plate style of restaurant with a higher proportion of vegetable forward dishes that were all delicious.
  • Dabachi Chez Cherif: A more casual eatery where the warm atmosphere made us feel like locals as donkeys pulling carts strolled by.
  • La Patisserie Marocaine: A treasure trove of Moroccan sweets, from flaky gazelle horns to sticky chebakia. We couldn’t resist taking a box back to the riad.
  • Quattro: Evening dining on the patio in mid November, yes please! Authentic Italian in the desert of Morocco.

Shopping in the Medina: A Guided Adventure

One of the highlights of our stay was a guided tour focused on the shops of the Medina. The maze-like streets were brimming with treasures, and our guide helped us discover authentic artisans and hidden gems. We found a beautiful leather pouf, a lightweight linen shirt, handcrafted shoes, and an array of herbs and spices that we couldn’t wait to bring home and use. The medina is truly a shopper’s paradise, with something to delight every member of the family.

A Splash of Color: Jardin Majorelle and Yves Saint Laurent Museum

To escape the hustle of the medina, we visited the tranquil Jardin Majorelle. The vibrant blue buildings, exotic plants, and reflective pools were a feast for the eyes and a calming oasis for the kids. Adjacent to the garden, the Yves Saint Laurent Museum offered a fascinating look at the designer’s work and his deep connection to Marrakech. The museum’s exhibits were engaging for all ages, making it a surprising hit with the whole family.

Henna Fun at Henna Louaya

For a memorable cultural experience, we visited Henna Louaya, where we all got organic henna tattoos. The artists were incredibly skilled and patient, creating intricate designs for the adults and simpler patterns for the kids. This was a fun way to connect with Moroccan traditions and left us with beautiful souvenirs that we wore proudly for the rest of the trip.

Luxurious Relaxation at the Four Seasons Marrakech

After the lively energy of the medina, we shifted gears with a stay at the Four Seasons Marrakech. This was a true retreat for the whole family. The kids couldn’t get enough of the Kids Club, and the resort’s perfectly heated pools were a dream come true—including one right in our room! The rooms were set up with play tents for the children that kept them entertained. For us parents, the serene gardens and gourmet restaurants were the perfect way to unwind. Whether lounging by the pool or enjoying a family meal in the open-air dining areas (anyone up for room service breakfast on the patio?), every moment felt like a special treat.

Final Thoughts

Our time in Marrakech offered the perfect mix of cultural discovery, family-friendly activities, and luxurious relaxation. From exploring the vibrant medina to unwinding at the Four Seasons, every moment was an opportunity to create lasting memories. Marrakech truly has something for everyone, and we’re already dreaming of our next visit to this magical city.
